MAIDUGURI, Borno State — BudgIT Foundation, in partnership with the Malala Fund, has convened a high-impact engagement with the School-Based Management Committee at Girl Child Concern Girls Academy in Ngomari Ward, Jere Local Government Area, to confront the resource deficits undermining girl-child education in northeast Nigeria.
The 25 June 2026 session brought together 18 stakeholders, exceeding the target of 15, including school leadership, teachers, and student representatives. Facilitated by BudgIT's Borno State Officer Gideon Innocent, the dialogue surfaced critical challenges facing the school and explored pathways for accountability in education financing.
Teachers identified urgent needs including professionally qualified matrons for the boarding facility, dedicated guidance and counselling staff, a fully equipped laboratory, a dining hall, instructional materials, and a functional healthcare system. The most powerful moment came when Head Girl Koshe Modu and Deputy Head Girl Aisha Babagana presented prepared notes detailing student concerns such as inadequate food supply, teacher shortages, poor teacher remuneration, and the need for basic supplies and medicines.
Participants noted that some students have internalized early marriage expectations, seeing little point in academic achievement. The group proposed a structured mentorship programme with accomplished women to challenge these limiting cultural narratives.
The School-Based Management Committee committed to regular proactive meetings and holistic welfare support for girls. The activity report noted that the school lacks not commitment but resources.
The engagement is part of the Education Champions Network project, a BudgIT initiative supported by the Malala Fund, implementing interventions across multiple states and advocating for increased education budget allocation for girl-child education.
