Former Senator Ishaya Abbo has unveiled an ambitious plan to industrialize Adamawa State, proposing large-scale cement and fertilizer factories as key drivers of economic growth. According to Abbo, a N200 billion fertilizer plant could generate around N100 billion in annual profit, while a medium-sized cement factory producing 4 million tonnes a year could earn N160 billion. If implemented, these projects could create tens of thousands of jobs, boost government revenue, and improve infrastructure and public welfare. The plan envisions a mix of government ownership and private partnerships, following a model similar to China’s approach.
Abbo insists that Adamawa has sufficient limestone deposits to support the cement factory, pointing to locations such as Guyuk, Numan, Demsa, Shelleng, and Yola along the Benue trough. He dismisses claims that the state lacks the resources for such a project. However, experts note that while the deposits are promising, the quality of limestone, as well as the availability of other essential materials like clay, gypsum, fuel, and water, will determine whether the cement factory can meet its projected production and profit targets.
Economically, the proposed profit figures are highly optimistic. Cement and fertilizer plants typically operate with lower profit margins than those projected by Abbo. High capital costs and operational expenses-such as energy, maintenance, and transport-could significantly reduce net profits. Detailed market studies and financial modeling will be necessary to verify the economic viability and ensure the projects are sustainable.
